A disastrous breakup was the catalyst for this Brisbane woman to step back from the norm and move to her dream job where she makes thousands of dollars.
A bad break-up has led this Brisbane woman to her dream job where she’s earning thousands.
Tierna Keatley, 25, better known as Chopsticks, has become one of Australia’s biggest videogame streamers over the past 18 months.
The Brisbane woman worked in several roles in the health industry before making the leap to streaming in 2020.
In that time, her streams attracted millions of viewers and after barely six months of making videos online, she was able to stream full-time by quitting her government job.
She said that the break-up of a long term partner gave her the kick she needed to finally start streaming in March 2020.
“I had fallen into this deep depression,” she told news.com.au.
“I was in this secure well-paying job for nine years. I was in a long-term relationship for nine years. When that ended, I fell to the bottom but I was still able to play games that really got help.
“I would struggle to go to work, I couldn’t really talk to my family or friends. I had isolated myself from everyone and I only had online communication.”
After getting back into gaming and streaming, she started growing her online presence.
The number of people watching his Fortnite streams, mostly from North America, grew from dozens to hundreds to thousands in a matter of weeks.
Her audience found her content on Facebook Gaming – the social media giant’s new video streaming platform. It was launched after the success of Twitch – a video streaming platform – which has made content producers millions by streaming themselves to play video games.
In 2020, Twitch reported revenue of $2.3 billion (USD) with an average of 2.84 concurrent viewers.
While Facebook Gaming is clawing for audiences in the highly competitive streaming market, they are offering partnerships and programs to content creators who use its platform.
This is how Ms. Keatley became involved with Goliath online.
“Being a partner really meant I had security. I have more money than I was earning in dentistry. It is the highest paying job I have ever had,” she said.
And her success caught the attention of her ex-boyfriend who helped start it.
“No,” she laughed. “We’re not back together, I’m on my own and that’s all.
“It ended abruptly and negatively … He tried to reach but that’s the end.”
